Baby’s First Bib

Sue Thompson’s Version (without scalloped border)


Materials: 1 ball cotton  yarn
               Crochet hook size 7 (G/H)

Instructions:

Row 1 : ch 28.
Row 2 : sc in second chain from hook and next 12 chs;  2 sc in next ch; sc in next 13 ch, turn. Ch 1. (28 sc)

Note: ch 1 at start of each row counts as first sc.

Row 3 : sc in back loop of each sc, ch 1, turn and rep row 2, increasing by 1 sc in every other row.

Continue working in back loops only for 27 rows - 13 ridges. Break off.

     Row 4 : sc 13 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 14 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 5, and all odd numbered rows :  Repeat row 3.

     Row 6 : sc 14 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 14 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 8 : sc 14 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 15 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 10 : sc 15 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 15 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 12 : sc 15 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 16 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 14 : sc 16 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 16 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 16 : sc 16 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 17 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 18 : sc 17 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 17 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 20 : sc 17 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 18 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 22 : sc 18 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 18 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 24 : sc 18 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 19 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

     Row 26 : sc 19 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc 19 sts.  Ch1.  Turn.

When 27 rows (13 ridges) done, break off.

Border:

Row 1 : ch 20, ch 1 into ridge and ch one into hollow down side of bib, ch 2 in corner, follow across bottom, ch 2 in next corner, ch 1 in ridge and 1 in hollow up other side. Ch 20, turn.
Row 2 : sc in back loop all way around. Rep. 4 more times.

Bib ties: Attach yarn to top of one side of bib and chain 50.  sl st in second ch from hook and in each  ch back to the beginning.  Finish off.  Make second tie on the other side of the bib following the same instructions.
